From 2016 to 2020, Hearst Health awarded the Hearst Health Prize to recognize successful population health programs. In 2022, the competition pivoted to showcase data science programs that have positively impacted health outcomes. Recent winners have demonstrated how AI can enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of treatment by improving access to care and enabling earlier interventions for at-risk patients.

Mount Sinai Health System
Developed NutriScan AI, a machine learning application that helps identify malnourished patients and enables providers to intervene sooner to prevent or reverse malnutrition. Implemented across six hospitals, NutriScan AI has helped Mount Sinai Health System:

Improve utilization of registered dietician resources

Increase the likelihood of identifying malnutrition approximately 2.5–3x

Achieve higher-quality ratings and increased hospital reimbursements

Stanford Medicine
Stanford Medicine created an algorithm that identifies patients at high risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, enabling earlier intervention to reduce the likelihood of a cardiovascular event. Using existing chest CT scans to analyze disease risk, this program has helped the Stanford team:

Protect patients from the expenses and radiation exposure associated with requiring additional scans

Improve physician productivity by reducing time spent on manual reviews of scans

Significantly increase the likelihood of patients to discuss and initiate treatment

2022

Constant Therapy Health
Constant Therapy Health developed an AI-powered platform that allows patients with a range of neurological conditions to access individualized therapy programs from home. With over half a million users, the platform has enabled Constant Therapy to:

Position digital therapeutics as a viable option for patients with limited access to in-person treatment

Administer over 5x more therapy compared to usual care delivery methods

Help patients achieve significant improvements on skills assessments (using the platform in addition to clinic therapy or as a replacement for standard at-home workbooks)
